Our beloved friend and companion of ten years, Sylvester, was recently diagnosed with Malignant Adenocarcinoma - Intestinal Cancer. We had these pieces created to help pay for his MUCH needed surgeries to have a golf ball sized tumor removed from his colon. His surgeries thus far have totaled more than four thousand dollars ($4,000.00+). We anticipate many more procedures necessary to cure his cancer. All proceeds from these pieces will go toward his medical expenses.

Two weeks ago, I had noticed that Sylvester seemed to be losing a little weight. Even though he was still his "Silly Man" self, running around the house and playing with the other cats, he was losing more weight than I thought to be normal. I attributed the weight loss to the kitten we rescued two months ago- and Sylvester getting more exercise.

Nonetheless, I took him to the vet to make sure he wasn't having "thyroid problems." He seemed and looked to be in tip-top shape. He was just at the vet three months prior for his annual exam, blood workup and vaccinations.

On this visit, blood work, x-rays, and a thyroid panel all showed Sylvester in perfect health. Upon a physical examination- our vet, Dr. Whitten, thought she "felt something." She thought maybe "he had to use his litter box." She suggested an Ultrasound just to be sure. Little did either of us know at that time that Sylvester was fighting for his life. An ultrasound revealed a golf ball sized tumor in his intestines which was about to perforate his colon. Dr Whitten wanted to perform emergency surgery and we gave her the "go ahead" immediately. When she opened Sylvester up, it was with much surprise and horror that she was unable to remove the tumor. She did a biopsy and closed him back up then gave us a referral to a specialist - an Oncologist and Feline Surgeon at Veterinary Specialty Hospital 2 1/2 hours away in Cary, NC. The biopsy was sent off for results.

Results of the biopsy revealed that Sylvester had an aggressively growing cancer. Malignant Adenocarcinoma. If it was not removed immediately, it would end his life. On October 24, 2003, we drove to Cary, NC and Sylvester underwent a full colectomy. They had to remove his entire colon in order to remove the tumor. Sylvester was hospitalized for 5 days and is now home.

Sylvester isn't back to himself yet, although we hope that he will start to feel better. He isn't eating much and is stapled from chest to tail. Unfortunately his cancer has spread to his lymph nodes and his time may be limited. We are waiting to hear whether Chemotherapy is an option for his type of cancer. We surely hope we caught it in time.

To think I almost blew off his weight loss because I attributed it to more exercise. This all happened over the course of 2 weeks! He only lost a few pounds. I never dreamed that the vet would tell me he had cancer. He wasn't showing any type of sickness at all. In fact, he was running around the house - full speed - playing with the other cats. I thought I was being a hypochondriac.

Please have your animals examined by veterinarians on a regular basis. They depend on us for their well being.

Update 03/25/2004:

With a heavy heart and much sadness, I must tell you that we lost Sylvester today. He fought and won many battles, but he lost the war against his cancer. He will be missed terribly. This is like losing our child :o(

The proceeds from these cats will go toward his surgeries and medical care which have exceeded over $5000.00.
